I would like to express my most sincere thanks to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for inviting me to witness the destruction of 9.55 tonnes of confiscated African elephant ivory today.
Over the past 24 months we have seen countries in Africa, East, South East and South Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America destroy stockpiles of illegally traded elephant ivory that has been seized and confiscated.

La communauté internationale a célébré la Journée mondiale de la vie sauvage des Nations Unies pour la troisième fois, le 3 mars 2016, et des pays et des hommes du monde entier se sont ralliés à cette occasion autour du thème « L’avenir de la vie sauvage est entre nos mains ».
Cette journée spéciale du calendrier des Nations Unies en faveur des espèces sauvages a de nouveau donné au monde l’opportunité de renouer avec le côté sauvage de notre planète et de reconnaître notre responsabilité collective dans la lutte qui mettra fin au commerce illégal des espèces sauvages.

We are most grateful to the Environmental Public Authority of the State of Kuwait for hosting and financing this week’s workshop on illegal trade in cheetahs.
Corruption is “an insidious plague” that is present in the wildlife sector just as it is in other sectors, indeed in virtually any form of human activity.
A clear message of the determination of the international community to work to prevent and combat corruption was sent with the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) of the UN Convention Against Corruption in 2003 and its entry into force in 2005.
