Trends in levels of illegal killing of elephants

The primary mandate of the MIKE programme is to monitor levels of illegal killing of elephants at a sample of sites spread across the range of African and Asian elephants. The chart below shows levels in the Proportion of Illegally Killed Elephants (PIKE) in Africa since 2002. The horizontal red line shows the likely threshold of sustainability. In other words, PIKE levels above the red line are likely to result in elephant population declines. For more details on PIKE, see the Data and Reports section.
