World Forest ID is a U.S. non-profit organization developing the world’s largest geo-referenced database of timber and agricultural samples, with the ambition to create a new global standard for credible, science-based verification of species and origin. By 2030 we will use our sample collection, housed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to develop chemical and biological reference data sufficient to support independent science-based verification for critical species and commodities in forest-connected supply chains.
This will allow government agencies and companies across the world to test forest products in trade against the reference data World Forest ID has developed in order to authenticate or challenge paper-based claims. In doing so we will support global efforts to conserve the world’s forests and enforce laws designed to tackle the trade in illegal, endangered, or protected specimens.
