In accordance with Resolution Conf. 11.16 (Ranching and trade in ranched specimens of species transferred from Appendix I to Appendix II), some of the Parties concerned have submitted to the Secretariat reports on approved ranching operations. These reports are now available on the 'National report' section of this website.
In the context of CITES, the term ‘ranching’ means the rearing in a controlled environment of specimens taken from the wild, and it is used mainly in relation to populations of Appendix-I species of animals that are no longer endangered and that are transferred to Appendix II in accordance with Resolution Conf. 11.16 so that they may benefit from this form of management.
Ranched species currently include only crocodilians, ranched for their skins and meat.
