Joint Statement by the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management for International Day of Biological Diversity, 22 May 2025

2025 Theme: Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development

As we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW) - a coalition of thirteen global champions for wildlife - reaffirms our pledge to the conservation of biodiversity and the advancement of sustainable development. Together, we champion sound and sustainable wildlife management, ecosystem integrity, thriving communities, and a healthier planet. Because when wildlife thrives, people thrive.

This year’s theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” is a timely reminder of the essential role that wildlife plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems - functionally intact, climatically resilient, that are foundational to food security, climate adaptation, and human well-being, sustaining the livelihoods of millions - particularly Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities who live in close connection with nature.

Sustainable wildlife management is at the heart of achieving harmony with nature. Through its five thematic objectives, CPW works to support countries and partners to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and its Targets, especially Targets 4, 5 and 9 and meet their obligations under the biodiversity-related Conventions. This work aims to ensure that conservation and sustainable use of wildlife contributes directly to sustainable, inclusive benefits for both people and planet.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, the CPW calls on governments, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, the private sector, non-governmental partners, and other stakeholders, to work together and invest in integrated, equitable, and science-based approaches to wildlife management as a vital pathway to living in harmony with nature and ensuring the existence of wild species for generations to come.

The Partnership collectively wishes everyone a Happy International Biodiversity Day!
