Excellencies, distinguished delegates, partners, and friends,

It is a great pleasure to be with you today for the launch of the Global Coalition to Halt the Extinction of Sharks and Rays.

The discussions held here at the third UN Ocean Conference have reminded us of the importance of stepping up action for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. They also highlight that synergies and cooperation at all levels are essential to achieving our shared ocean conservation goals.

In this spirit, and taking into consideration the value of partnerships to achieve shared goals, the CITES Secretariat welcomes this initiative between governments and partner organizations dedicated to the conservation of sharks and rays.

Several shark and ray species have been included in the CITES Appendices by CITES Parties. This means that international trade in these species is subject to the requirements of the Convention – Parties must ensure that trade is legal, sustainable, and traceable. We are confident that this coalition can play a meaningful role in supporting Parties to achieve this objective.

The CITES Secretariat looks forward to cooperating with the countries and organizations that join this initiative, and we will follow its development closely, contributing our technical, legal and scientific expertise on those actions that are in line with the Secretariat’s mandate.
